Roland Ries

Mayor of Strasbourg since 1997, he has been reelected since then, last time in 2014. He is also Vice -President of the Metropolitan area in charge of Transport.

Strasbourg is the European capital, the headquarters of European institutions : European Parliament, European council, European court of human rights. It is also the 2nd diplomatic city in France (after Paris) with more than 75 embassies and one hundred international NGO’s.

He acted as leader of the contracting authority for the construction of the first two tram lines in Strasbourg. Throughout a ambitious and remarkable transportation plan for Strasbourg, Roan Ries had gained a reputation of expert in transportation, in charge of affairs at a national level:

President of French cyclable cities club ( 1993-1996)

Vice-President of the GART (Grouping of Authorities Responsible for Transport).

Chair of the Urban Transport Commission of the “Commissariat Général au Plan” (national economic planning agency) with a report submitted to the Prime Minister in 2003).

He taught in senior high school for many years. He held a aggregation in French literature.
